Driver Faces Litany of Charges After Car Slams Into Utility Poll

The 29-year-old man was 'completely uncooperative' and refused to take a breathalyzer test, according to police.

A 29-year-old man is facing a litany of charges after his vehicle slammed into a utility pole in the 6400 block of Kenilworth Avenue Tuesday night.

According to Chief David Morris, the man — a local resident — was traveling at a high rate of speed when his car struck the pole on the southbound side of the road at around 11 p.m.

Firefighters from the and the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, where they extracted one trapped occupant inside the car.

The driver initially intended to flee the scene of the crash, Morris said, but stopped himself when emergency responders arrived.

Though the man allegedly denied that he was the driver of the car, a female passenger advised officers that he had been behind the wheel at the time of the accident, Morris said.

The man refused to submit to a breathalyzer test, according to Morris, and would not sign the citation issued to him by police.

"He was completely uncooperative," Morris said.

The driver was transported to Doctors Community Hospital complaining of injuries and later released to police custody. He was charged with:

  • driving without a license
  • failure to control speed to avoid a collision
  • driving under the influence of alcohol
  • driving while impaired
  • refusing to sign a traffic citation
  • driving at a speed greater than reasonable
  • reckless driving
  • negligent driving

Morris declined to identify the suspect by name pending disposal of the case.
