Prince George's Holding Earth Day Mulch Giveaway

The county is offering mulch made from last year's Christmas trees.

Mulch ground from last year's Christmas trees could help you to decorate your garden this summer—for free.

That's because the Prince George's County Department of Environmental Resources Waste Management Division is holding a free mulch giveaway for county residents on Saturday, April 21.

“What better way to go 'green' and celebrate Earth Day than to beautify your yard and community by adding mulch to the landscape?” DER Director Samuel Wynkoop said in a statement. “Mulch helps to deter weeds, keep the soil moist and prevent soil erosion. I encourage all residents to take advantage of this free resource to enhance your neighborhood and the environment.”

The giveaway goes from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Prince George's County Yard Waste Composting Facility at 6601 Southeast Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro. The mulch is mostly the product of discarded Christmas trees left out by county residents after the holiday season.

There are some rules for the giveaway: only non-commercial vehicles may take mulch, and only up to 3/4ths of a ton may be hauled off. More information can be had by calling the county's recycling office at 301-883-5045.
