Wind Blows Over Neigborhood Tree, No One Injured

The trees fell from a yard on Rhode Island Avenue and Oliver Street into the road Tuesday.

If you were outside at all Tuesday, the bitter sting of the cold wind may have met your face and hands.

But for resident Rachael Frye, the wind could have caused some damage to her home, when a large pine tree in her yard snapped and fell. Frye, who was in her home at the time, was unaware the tree had fallen until Riverdale Park Police knocked on her door.

Luckily, it fell in the street instead at around 2 p.m., according to resident Don Lynch, who reported the incident to Patch.

Colleen Ferguson with the town's code enforcement told Lynch,“It was very fortunate that the tree fell at a time when school had not let out yet and that it fell away from the house”.

Lynch said, public works quickly came to the scene, blocked off the road and began removing the tree that stretched across Rhode Island Avenue.

The tree also took down a streetlight and Pepco was contacted.

Lynch believed the large amount of water in the ground beneath the roots should be investigated for possible pipe damage. He said the wet ground and high winds may have worked together to bring the large pine down.
