Why UMd. Sirens Blared for Thursday's Tornado

College Park Patch asked the university's police department why they blared sirens during Thursday's tornado watch.

After the in Virginia Thursday, it was no surprise that severe weather was headed to the northern Prince George's County region.

Yet, no tornado warning was issued from the National Weather Service — only a tornado watch.

So when sirens started blaring from the University of Maryland's campus, many local residents bunkered in their basements with their pets awaiting the tornado to hit. At , students and families were asked to line up against the wall until the impending tornado passed. But the tornado didn't come.
