Some Residents Say Power is Back On

Extreme heat caused power outages in the Town of University Park, City of College Park and Beltsville.

Update, 4:44 p.m.: University Park residents are reporting their power is back on, thanks to the quick work of Pepco.

Residents began reporting power outages a little after 3 p.m. and by 4:30 p.m. the power was back up.

Robert T. Stumpff, Director of Public Works in College Park said he is not sure how vast the power outage is in College Park.

He said businesses in the Edgewood and Rhode Island Avenue intersection, and including the Youth Family Services building at 9916 Rhode Island Avenue were out of power.

Department of Public Works building at 9219 51st Avenue was not affected.  having a power outage.

Stumpff said town's have to adhere to the county's listing for cooling centers however he anticipates discussions beginning next week between city staff and at least one councilmember about the lack of a contingency plan.

"Now that we've seen Pepco back to their old standard of not being able to provide power," he said, this contingency plan has become more urgent.

Pepco is still reporting 1,173 customers in Prince George's County are without power.

Original Post, 4:10 p.m.: University Park, College Park and Beltsville residents are reporting power outages all over town—leaving the elderly and others with air-conditioning.

According to residents, the power is out, but Pepco is aware on the situation and is working on it, Prince George's County Fire/EMS Spokesman Mark Brady said.

Although town hall is not capable of hosting people, Police Chief Michael Wynnyk said the town does have a generator in case of emergencies.

in the western and southern parts of the county, however, if you’re trying to stay closer to home, consider the library, the Mall at Prince George's and Univerity Town Center to stay cool.
