Thanksgiving Tuesday Travel on the Rise

Trying to beat the rush? You're not alone.

We’re all thankful for a long holiday weekend coming up, but not so much for the slow or immobile traffic we’re guaranteed to encounter en route to seeing our families.

Not this year, you think to yourself. I’m leaving on Tuesday instead of Wednesday.

You’re not that tricky. It appears a lot of Marylanders are on to that game.

Tuesday is becoming the new Wednesday before Thanksgiving, as far as travel goes, The Baltimore Sun reported Monday.

There were 148,475 vehicles that passed through the Fort McHenry Tunnel last year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. That’s only about 9,000 fewer than the next day, and about 21,000 more than an average Tuesday in November, The Sun reported. That’s apparently a statewide trend, experienced at several toll roads last year.

AAA Travel Services is projecting a 4 percent increase in Thanksgiving travel nationwide. Of the 42.5 million Americans expected to go more than 50 miles away from home, 90 percent will be driving; 8 percent will fly. See The Washington Post and Associated Press for more.
