Preview: Science in Your Community

Saturday afternoon, University Park Community Solar organization will host a "Science in Your Community" event.

Head to University Park's Church of the Brethren Saturday at 2 p.m. for an afternoon of science with the University Park Community Solar organization.

The afternoon will begin with Pepco presenting an awards check for excess electricity produced at the church, which councilmember James Gekas says, means the church produced more solar energy than it consumed.

This is "very unusual and a big deal," councilmember David Brosch said in an e-mail.

"It's a nice gesture by Pepco to show up and show commitment to solar energy," Gekas said.

Following that event, there will be a county rain barrel program, designed to teach residents how to recycle rainwater on their property.

The afternoon will conclude with a program on composting, hosted by Benny Erez, master composter at Eco City Farms in Edmonston.

Gekas says he expects it to be an interesting series of programs and hopes to see a good turnout of residents.
