MTV Turns 30

The television known once for playing music videos, celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The television network credited for the popularity of music videos, launching many music and acting careers is celebrating it's 30th birthday today.

The first music video ever played on MTV was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles on August 1 in 1981, but since then the network is known more for its reality TV shows - like "Real World," "Teen Mom" and "The Jersey Shore."

Locally, however, MTV doesn't have too many ties — although in 2005, they reported when Prince George's County Police charged the Compton, NY-based rapper the Game with assaulting two men in nearby Lanham, MD.
