Mosquitoes Beware — It's National Mosquito Control Week

Tips to help decrease the mosquito population in your backyard.

This week marks National Mosquito Control Awareness Week and while we're all a fan of being outdoors for a cookout or just to enjoy the weather, these pests can make it rather difficult even with all citronella candles and bug spray.

So here are a few ways you can help control the mosquito population in your backyard:

  • Reduce standing water to eliminate mosquitoes including flipping over plastic toys, wagons and even playsets, removing water from plant saucers and outdoor dog bowls. Check tarps, gutters and flat roofs for standing water as well.
  • Remove excess grass, leaves, ivy, firewood and clippings from yards.
  • Utilize a mosquito elimination barrier treatment around the home and yard. It'll eliminate 90 percent of the mosquitoes and ticks on the property.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mosquitoes and ticks can carry diseases like West Nile and Lyme disease. The CDC estimates that about 300,000 Americans have become ill from the West Nile virus since it arrived here over 11 years ago.
