Local Christians Mark Ash Wednesday

Many churches in the area are holding special services to observe the beginning of Lent.

For many Christians, today holds special significance as Ash Wednesday. Falling 46 days before Easter, the fast marks the beginning of a period of penitential preparation known as Lent.

Many churches observe Ash Wednesday with services that include the placing of ashes on worshipers' foreheads—a sign of repentence and the source of the fast's name.
