Hurricane Irene Could Bring Strong Winds, Heavy Rainfall Thursday

Although Hurricane Irene is set to hit the coast of Delaware and southern New Jersey, the hurricane may bring stormy weather to Riverdale Park and University Park.

Only a day after an , predictions about the damage a hurricane might cause have already begun.

And let's face it — in this area a strong thunderstorm has the power to knock out power, and therefore Internet and phone service, leave trees in the roadway and create major problems to homeowners and commuters.

The National Weather Service is predicting strong storms in Prince George's County starting Thursday around 3 p.m. These storms are caused by a cold front affiliated with Hurricane Irene, but not the hurricane itself, according to their website.

Thunderstorms and showers are set to continue through Saturday, when NWS predicts the hurricane will make landfall in the Mid-Atlantic region.

By Sunday, NWS predicts the storm will be out of the region, although strong wind gusts could remain.
