Flooding Expected in Riverdale, University Park Through the Afternoon

With many road closures and some power outages, residents should take safety precautions.

Editor's Note: This story has been corrected. In an earlier version of this post, we misidentified the road where the tree fell. We regret the error.

Update, 1:30 p.m.: University Park Director of Public Works Mickey Beall, said no town roads have been closed due to flooding.

However, Beall said a road in College Heights Estates was closed earlier today, when a large tree in a private yard snapped and fell into a power line and pole.

At 9 a.m., The flood warning for Prince George's County in central Maryland has been extended through 4:30 p.m.

Driving and Road Closures

Don't rush to work this morning, and don't take risks.

According to the National Weather Service, most flooding related deaths occur in vehicles and encourages drivers not to cross flooded roads or bridges.

The Prince George's County office for the county executive released an updated list of county road closures at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, which can be found here.

Mortorists are encouraged to drive cautiously in ongoing heavy rain to avoid hydroplaning, which occurs when one or more tires of a vehicle lose contact with the road, making it difficult to control the vehicle. Drivers should reduce speeds and increase the distance between their car and the one preceding it, according to a Maryland State Police report.

Power Outages

As the ground becomes soggier, tree roots become less anchored in the ground, making it more likely that they'll topple into power lines. Just after 7 a.m., the Pepco outage map shows there are fewer than five customers in the Riverdale Park and surrouding areas reporting power outages (zip codes 20740, 20742, 20737and 20770).

If your power goes you, Pepco encourages you to report it.
