MD Offers Tax-Free Weekend For Some Appliances

Some Energy Star appliances will be tax-free this Presidents Day weekend.

If you're thinking about getting energy-efficient appliances in your home, this weekend may be your best bet to buy them.

Beyond the Presidents Day sales at many appliance stores in the region, the Comptroller Peter Franchot announced that some Energy Star appliances would be sold forgoing the 6 percent sales tax if bought Feb. 19 through Feb. 21.

  • Air conditioners.
  • Clothes washers and dryers.
  • Furnaces.
  • Heat pumps.
  • Boilers.
  • Solar water heaters, which are tax-free year-round.
  • Standard-size refrigerators.
  • Dehumidifiers.
  • Programmable thermostats.
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs.

The Shop Maryland Energy weekend has the potential to be a win-win-win for consumers, for retailers and for the environment, said Franchot (D).
