University Park Hosts Garden Tour

The annual event hosted by the Woman's Club brought out neighbors even with the rain.

The clouds in the sky and the drizzle couldn't take away from the beauty of annual garden tour.

Residents spent afternoon strolling through neighbor's gardens, learning from one another and sharing tips.

George Callcott, of the 4300 block of Clagett Road, said he's and his wife, Peggy, have been tending to their garden for 45 years.

When the Callcotts moved to University Park in 1964, the foundation of a great garden was already there, he said, including some of the azaleas.

However after retiring, he spent his afternoons playing in the yard, a trait he picked up from his father. Rhododendrons have been his enthusiasm for a long time.

Callcott shared tips with neighbor Ellen Whitaker, who also was a home on the tour.

Whitaker has a been maintaining two beehives in her backyard for five years in addition to her garden. She said she started it because she thought it was interesting.

Last year she harvested 170 pounds of honey, which she sold at modest cost to neighbors.

In addition to the tour, the University Park Woman's Club hosted a plant exchange at , where neighbors could trade items they grow in their garden with another neighbor.

The event is annually held in the spring.
