In this “People Behind the Policies” blog, a Principal talks about her experiences with implementing breakfast within her school and how it relates to our goal to end childhood hunger in Maryland by 2015.
“The Most Important Meal of the Day”
Hunger is thought to be a third-world problem, but the reality that 1 in 5 American children struggles with hunger qualifies it as an all-too-real problem here in the United States as well. At Patterson High School we see it every day. Roughly 80% of Patterson High School students receive free or reduced lunch, and many students are very hungry throughout the school day.
Patterson started taking on the hunger issue the way we should start every day–with breakfast. Even students whose families are not struggling to provide food arrive to school without having eaten. Studies show that students who eat breakfast at school perform and behave better than students who skip breakfast at home. Moreover, breakfast-eating students are less likely to be overweight, more likely to be present and on time, and it improves the learning environment. With all of these facts out on the table it was obvious to us that Patterson High School would be serving breakfast this year. Thanks to Share Our Strength, the First Class Breakfast program was initiated at Patterson.
Every morning Patterson students engage in 500 Conversations, a homeroom-style period where students discuss a daily topic in efforts to make them not only scholars, but well-rounded adults as well. The cafeteria staff, HealthCorps coordinator, and Lifeskills program work together to deliver the First Class Breakfast program’s nutritious meals to each and every Patterson student, free, during the 500 Conversations period. At first, students were hesitant to accept the milk and cereal or bagel and cream cheese with juice. They are now very eager to share the meal together. Students who previously ate nothing all day long now eagerly await the arrival of their in-class breakfast. The program has given students further incentive to attend the 500 Conversations period. Teachers believe that the program has improved performance, alertness and participation in class. With hunger out of the way, students can now concentrate on their studies. Patterson High School is devoted to go beyond teaching ABCs and 123s, to empower Baltimore’s teenagers to be healthy adults who move on to positive futures. The First Class Breakfast Program, along with Patterson’s new lunchroom salad bar, is setting the tone for a newly healthy school environment that leaves no kid hungry, and all kids successful.

I wonder how many mothers of these hungry children go to the nail or hair salon every other day? How many are walking around in $200 basketball shoes? Maybe people need to get their priorities straight before we keep feeding their kids.

Omalley has turned this once beautiful state into a sanctuary cesspool of corruption. He now has md as the 4th highest taxed state in the country. Not just higher taxes, he allows those phone money hungry fixed speed and red light camera's to scam us all. He also raised every dang thing he could like doubling mva and all records we need like birth certificates etc. He doubled all of it. If you need a copy of something it used to be $12.50.. Now $25 for 1 stinkin' copy. Gas tax, toll fees, food gauging, Rents especially section 8 rents are now doubled. We pay for all of it. We are #2 for food stamp fraud and if your an illegal no id needed to get them or welfare while they work our jobs. they average 5 babies and all on the system. Md taxpayers pay $2billion 'A YEAR TO SUPPORT ILLEGAL ALIENS'>. O'malley says its a federal issue. So he's allowed to disregard our laws being broken. It is a felony to hire illegals yet he allows it.. The employers of illegals are our politicians best campaign donors..

Pst, amdactivist, Maryland's tax burden has fallen under O'Malley, especially compared to his Republican predecessor, Ehrlich, even as average state tax burden across the U.S. has risen relatively quickly.
2006: Ehrlich's final year, MD's tax burden was 10.3% v. U.S. avg. of 9.6%.
O'Malley has lowered that burden (10.1% in 2009) even while U.S. avg. has risen to 9.9%.
But I take it facts aren't important to you, judging from your inane and illogical rants on here.

There is also a huge market in food stamp fraud that has been investigated by the media in major cities all over the U.S. where food stamp credits are traded for cash at a discount. The cash can then be used for anything you want.

some of you really don't know anything.. Stop listening to omalley lies and do your dang homework. Md is #2 in food stamp fraud.Food stamps are being sold for cash. They being used many times to buy anything they want besides food including alcohol, cigarettes.. Md is #48 in job creation. Omalley had a surplus when he took office. He lost that and we still in a deficit .. it was $2billion in the whole about a year ago. Now he is running for president in 2016 and needs to show a surplus. Md does pay $2billion a year to illegal aliens and we have Many employers in md that continue to commit a felon and hire illegals yet they are on our systems. These employers are the destruction of our country. We can give you a list of these employers names, addresses, phone numbers and jobs they have done and pictures and videos.. Yet many people will still support them. They feasting off illegals low paying jobs, no benefits, workmens comp, social security etc. Plus these employers take out taxes and where does that go? Most goes into the employers pocket. So i would advise omalley supporters from liberals to at least research.. You'll be quite surprised omalley words don't equal the truth.

He's been around for years starting with the destruction of baltimore city. Blake continues this pattern. He started with a surplus and ended up in the whole. It's not rocket science JoeBlob. The Bush Presidency put the US into one of the biggest Recessions the country has ever seen meanwhile the cost of living (especially the cost of food) has been skyrocketing. This results in more people qualifying for the SNAP program.
This isn't a local issue. It's a National issue.

Why are we feeding kids breakfast, lunch and dinner...and now even during summer at school when the lazy "parent" at home does nothing constructive all day and clearly isn't working thus plenty of time to put a sandwich together. Not to mention we already provide WIC and food stamps. What the heck are they doing with the other free food that we need other source of free food? If anyone is hungry with all these duplicate food programs then they're too stupid for words. Do we have to deliver the food and show them how to make breakfast? This is what happens when you create an entire class of people that apparently exist as nothing more than government pets to be fed, vaccinated and housed with no expectation of effort or return. Heck my dog at least wags it's tail...most of these ignoramouses would be just as happy to rob and shoot you or each other.

We feed the welfare people 5 days a week in schools, breakfast ,lunch and dinner, s owe really should only have to feed them on the weekends, so all of the snap programs should be cut by 75% at the least, I have family that works for PG county school system cafeterias and everyone of them say the same thing, most of the kids DRIVE to school in a car, wearing their air jordans, north face jackets, jewerly all over, nails done, weave done, IPhone and IPod with them and get free everything, It is the culture we live with now and it will never change, it will only get worse every year, we have destroyed our own country tanks to liberalism, it all sounds good, and it makes people feel good, but it does not work and never will, hence the reason democrats have this war on successful people and their wealth, it is now a bad thing to be successful and wealthy be others are to stupid to take care of themselves we have to steal it from the ones with wealth, as much as possible. This state has been under democrat control for hundreds of years, a couple republican governors here and their but never control of the state purse strings, and of course we get less from the government if you are a tax payer, but an illegal or low-income you get more and more every year, moral of the story be like the 73% of African american mothers and give birth out of wedlock, claim their is no father and get yourself on all the programs, the number 44% for latinos, but nobody cares they have Uncle Sam,

Who qualifies for food stamps"
"Generally, people who fall into one of these groups can get Food Stamps:
U.S. citizens
Many legal immigrants
Citizen or legal permanent resident children of undocumented immigrants
Low-income workers
People who are homeless
People living in battered women’s programs, community mental health programs, drug and alcohol treatment centers, and homeless shelters
When applying for Food Stamps, it is important to understand your “Household Size.” A household is defined as one or more persons who live together and purchase and prepare meals together. The
A household may describe a family or a group of roommates."
"For most households in Maryland, information about assets (checking account, savings, and cash on hand) is no longer required when applying for Food Stamps. Certain households, such as those consisting of someone who has intentionally broken program rules in the past, may be asked to show that they have less than $2,000 in resources in order to qualify for Food Stamps. This amount does not include the value of your car or home or certain types of savings, such as retirement or college funds."
AND there is NO INCOME limit to be cut off receiving food stamps. Only the size of the "family" or group of "roommates" is the determinate factor.
