Memorial Day Weekend 2013 runs from May 25-27 and is the unofficial first weekend of summer. County schools are closed and many offices close to mark this holiday. While swimming pools typically open up this weekend, there are a number of other local activities that may interest you and your family. Washington, D.C. Closing exhibits will not be replaced to save on security costs.
Exhibits that are scheduled to close at the Hirshhorn, National Museum of African Art and Smithsonian will not be replaced due to sequestration, according to a Smithsonian spokeswoman. Linda St. Thomas told the DCist website that “in terms of the security of our visitors, bigger crowds require more security,” but she added, “Every museum is still open every day.” The actual number of exhibits accessible to visitors at open museums are yet another casualty of sequestration. On April 16, Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough warned Congress of the potential effects of sequestration on the area’s museums - gallery closings, reduced educational program offerings and building maintenance issues. The Greenbelt movie theater was chosen to compete for grant money from Partners in Preservation.
The city of Greenbelt would like to rennovate the old Greenbelt Theatre, but in order to do so the city needs your support. The theater is competing for grant money from Partners in Preservation which along with American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation is set to give $1 million in grant money to DC-area historic places. The theater is one of 24 places selected and the city is hoping to use the money to supplement funding for the theater's rennovation. According to a city spokeswoman, the rennovation would return the theater to look like it did in its early years and would entail "upgrading to a digital projection system, overhauling the mechanical equipment, overall renovation of the auditorium and the …

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a corned beef and cabbage recipe that is delicious and incredibly easy to make.
Five ingredients, one crockpot and a few hours of cooking time is all it takes to prepare this corned beef and cabbage recipe. With minimal preparation time, you can start this meal early in the day and enjoy a St. Patrick's Day feast by supper. Ingredients: Corned beef brisket (I used Murphy's and David with included seasoning packet) 1/2 small onion, sliced 8 - ounces of baby carrots 1 dozen very small potatoes (I used baby golds) 1 head of cabbage, cut into wedges Directions: Place brisket in a 6-quart crockpot and sprinkle with seasoning packet. Top with sliced onion, carrots and potatoes. Cover meat and vegetables with water and cook on high for four hours. Reduce heat to low. Place cabbage wedges on top of meat and vegetable mixture …
