Week in Review: Honoring Veterans, Helping the Homeless, and Continuing Concerns Over Cafritz

A round-up of this week's headlines.

The Calvert House Inn will be donating a portion of their lunch time income November 13-20 to Help by Phone Limited. Help by Phone Limited is an organization offering support to the newly homeless in Prince George's County. Stop in for a bite!

Riverdale Park's town council held their regular legislative meeting this week and voted on some new traffic calming measures in Ward 6, passed a resolution to purchased the property known as Jey's Auto, and approved a letter from the mayor to the Cafritz developers. The council remains concerned about the developer's plans for a large surface parking lot in front of the Whole Foods. The Cafritz developers responded to these concerns.

The University Park Town Council also held their regular legislative meeting where Mayor John Tabori swore in their newest council member, David Brosch. They also discussed designs for the Route 1 bus service and a National Trail Service Grant. They also discussed local election procedures; residents remain split on this issue.

The Riverdale Park Fire Department was pleased to welcome back Fire Chief Charles Ryan. Chief Ryan has spent the last several months recovering from injuries he received during a fire last April in D.C., where four other fire fighters were injured as well.

Need People U Trust, a volunteer group that helps the homeless in Prince George's County, serves food and distributes clothing to the neediest in our county. They are currently seeking funding to support a centralized distribution center.

The Riverdale Park Police Department's crime report held encouraging news. Violent crimes are down and property crimes remain even. Police Chief David Morris reminds residents to beware of the potential for car theft when leaving vehicles unattended to warm up as the weather gets colder.

The Riverdale Park Farmers Market had a banner season. Next week is the last market until next spring, so make sure to stop by.

As the county planning board vote approaches in December, both University Park and Riverdale Park residents remain concerned about the Cafritz  development plans. In a worksession held in Riverdale Park on Wednesday, citizens heard from the developer and expressed their concerns about pedestrian safety and community connections, among other things.

The MTA held a community meeting in Riverdale this week, and some businesses voiced concerns that the new light rail could force them to close down or relocate their businesses. Other residents are looking forward to having a new transit option nearby.

Veterans Day was Friday. Riverdale Park held a wreath-laying ceremony at the town's memorial, and local residents David Fosse and Bob Headley recalled their experiences serving this country in Vietnam.
