Update, Oct. 1:

University of Maryland Libraries posted an extended version of its "Gangnam Style" video over the weekend, featuring a long choreographed sequence and culminating in footage from Friday's flash mob (see above).

Original article:

A University of Maryland "Gangnam Style" flash mob drew hundreds of people to McKeldin Mall Wednesday afternoon—but the end result was a bit more "mob" than the perfectly synchronized routine of K-pop fame.

The event, coordinated by University of Maryland Libraries, aimed to have students perform the distinctive dance moves featured in the music video for Korean rapper PSY's hit single. Organizers collected thousands of fans on Facebook and distributed a tutorial for would-be mobbers.

But when the opening sound cue came on Wednesday, participants rushed into the center of the mall, forming a jumbled, jumping mass of dancers that never quite got in synch.

Still, a little disorder didn't stop many of the mobbers—or hundreds of onlookers—from having some fun.

"I got my dance on, so it's all good," sophomore Matt Henricks told The Diamondback.

Hey guys, wanna throw some attribution to my roommate Ben for his recording of the video that you're playing off as yours?

Hi Mike--

Certainly, I'll make that clear in the caption. (It wasn't my intention to pass it off as a Patch video—it's a YouTube embed, and his name is on the original—but you're right that he deserves a prominent credit.)

Thanks,
John

As a UMD student, the flashmob didn't actually last for long. They had to shoot that bit in the library because the flashmob was considered kind of underwhelming/unsuccessful.
