Sorensen Elected to Ward 5 Council Seat
The Beechwood Road resident carried 100% of the vote in Tuesday's special election.
The votes are in—all 13 of them—and a victor declared in the uncontested race for University Park's Ward 5 Town Council seat.
Heidi Sorensen, 47, coasted to a win in Tuesday's special election, collecting 100 percent of the vote. She will take over a post left vacant since former Councilwoman Tracey Toscano stepped down in January to lease a residence in a different ward.
Ward 5 covers the northeast corner of University Park.
Sorensen, an attorney for Foley & Lardner LLP who has lived on Beechwood Road since 1998, called University Park "a really unique community" with a need for people to serve in town government.
"One of the things that inspired me to run was Mayor [John] Tabori's involvement in an issue that I had a personal interest in many years ago. … He came over to talk to me personally," Sorensen said.
Since coming to University Park, Sorensen has served as a member of the Adelphi Pool board of directors, as a leader with Girl Scout Troop 96, and as a soccer coach for the College Park Boys and Girls Club.
As a council member, Sorensen said she would focus on the top concerns of her constituents, including quality of life issues, effective community policing, and the financial stability of town government.
The next town council meeting is scheduled for April 2 (7:30 p.m.) at University Park Elementary School.

Is anyone else embarrassed that only a dozen people bothered to vote?
