Tens of thousands of onlookers watched Tuesday morning as Shuttle Discovery and its specially-equipped 747 carrier made a series of flyovers across the DC region, a fitting end to the spacecraft's final scheduled flight.

The retired shuttle was en route from Florida to Dulles International Airport, where it safely landed later in the morning. From there, the vehicle will be transported a short distance to the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center and placed on permanent display starting Friday.
