Riverdale Park Residents May Get Access to Shuttle UM
If the state legislature votes to approve the town's resolutions, residents will have one more way to get around the county.
Area residents may soon have another method of transportation beyond Prince George's County TheBus and WMATA.
Riverdale Park Town Administrator Sara Imhulse said Monday that the town in conjunction with neighboring towns of University Park, Berwyn Heights and Greenbelt are asking the state legislature for approval to use the University of Maryland's Shuttle service.
Currently only those affiliated with the UMD can use the shuttle service, however, with this adjustment any town resident would be able to service to connect to metro rail or other transportation systems.
Councilman Alan Thompson drafted a resolution for the town and said after researching the shuttles routes realized that it already stops in various places through town.
There are stops near M Square, along Route 1, Kenilworth Avenue and parts of East West Highway to New Carrollton.
Imhulse added that routes also go out to Silver Spring and Gaithersburg, allowing local residents transportation out to Montgomery County as well.
However College Park Patch reported in September that its city council voted to continue the Shuttle-UM Program even though they believed their wasn't higher participation.
College Park has paid the university to use the shuttle for a three-year trial period, however out of the 1000 passes available to residents, they haven't even allotted half.
In September, College Park Councilman Patrick Wojahn attributed low ridership to lack of information as to where exactly the shuttle goes or how often it runs. He added that because the shuttle is designed to cater to university students and staff, service tends to be limited in areas not heavily populated by those groups.
Nevertheless, he said, he wants to see the pilot through to its final year in order to encourage the use of public transportation.
"It's the easiest way we can work to address traffic issues that we constantly hear about on US 1," he said.
Council will vote on the resolution at its Dec. 6 meeting.

This would be great, especially if they could manage to get one of the shuttles to run through the town center. Ever since the accident w/ the MARC train the other year, Metrobuses no longer go through the town center and the County buses don't run on weekends; those of us who live in town have to walk out to Route 1 or down to the elementary school for a bus.
