Residents, Volunteers Work Together to Clean Briar Ditch

More than 70 volunteers cleaned up the tributary and woods behind William Wirt Middle School.

Matresses, tires and plastic were just some of thr items volunteers found Saturday morning cleaning out Briar Ditch behind William Wirt Middle School.

Nearly 75 volunteers including residents of Riverdale Heights and Riverdale Hills, students from Wirt Middle and Parkdale High, their parents and others from the Anacostia Watershed Society, Riverdale Heights Fire Department and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, cleaned up the tributary behind the school — as a part of an effort put together by a community association.

Marty Newman, president of the RRC Community Association, said the Department of Environmental Resources provided a dumpster, recycling bins and cleanup equipment for volunteers.

Newman aid although volunteers did find some odd items, there was less trash than the previous cleanup in 2009.

She said they hope to continue the cleanup effort every two years.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in this important event. Our volunteer group was more than 70 strong and was quite diverse: black, white, and brown, young and "seasoned", blue and white collar, male and female, singles and families, gay and straight. Thanks to each of them our stream and woods are clean! Special thanks to Sonia for covering this story. Although all media was invited, Patch.com was the only media to show enough interest in something positive happening in Riverdale.
