POLL: Should September 11 be a National Holiday?

Tuesday will mark 11 years since the United States was attacked by terrorists.

The president has called for a national day of service to remember the attacks of September 11, 2001, on Tuesday. Do you think the day should be honored in other ways?

We want to know if you think 9/11 should be a national holiday. Take our poll below and tell us in the comments how the nation should remember the thousands of lives lost in the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, the Pentagon and on United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville, PA.

Are you holding an event for September 11? Add it to your neighborhood Patch calendar. (Directions linked here.)

Why should it be a holiday? Has Pearl Harbor Day ever been a holiday? No.

No reason at all to make this a holiday. We have too many as it is.

I do not believe 9-11 should be a national holiday. Why would we celebrate a day terrorists destroyed our citizens. As for the folks that were lost that day, it is no different from others that were lost in other wars, Viet Nam, WW I, WW II or the civil war ... families remember and close friends remember ... there is no need for a national holiday. Could have liberal leave for those that want to attend church to remember.

The atmosphere would be more celebratory if we designated the day Osama bin Laden was killed as National Navy SEAL Day. I would certainly make merry for that. Go Navy!

We could a celebrate by having a drink I bought at a bar in OC for $9.11 right after he was killed called "The Bin Laden" - two shots and a splash of salt water!!!

In this day and age, we all know where we were and how we felt. There was such a rush of emotions. Scared, bewildered, unbelievable. How do we explain this to our children, much less ourselves. Innocence was definitely lost that day. I felt inept to take care of my children.
I know I was one of a few people who was awake and listened when we got Osma Bin Laden, I awoke my husband and brother and they needed there sleep. and put me off. To me, it was unbelievable. I was so proud of being an American. It was like we finally did what supposedly those wars were suppose to do. Immediatlly afterwords, I wanted us out of Afghanistan.

Tuesday will mark 11 years since the United States was attacked by Arab terrorists.
What are you afraid of, "free" people?
No holiday. Or the first thing we have is a Mattress sale on Rockville Pike.

All federal holidays except Labor Day and Memorial Day should be eliminated. Over 10 years that would save over 100 billion dollars. Perhaps more. Just moving them to Saturday or Sunday would save even more.

I don't think we need another Federal holiday, especially not one commemorating such a horrific event in US history. Who doesn't remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when the planes crashed into the Twin Towers. I can and certainly do acknowledge the thousands of lives lost as well as the innocence lost every year without it being a national holiday. Let's not make this day political.

I feel that it should be a Federal Holiday, not one of celebration, but one of Observance and Memorials. Those who lost family and friends that tragic day, all of the Public Service workers and citizens that dedicated themselves to the Search & Rescue and the Search & Recovery should have that day to remember those we as a Nation have lost. On that fateful day, our Nation came together as one. Strangers helping strangers: donations of food, water, shelter, clothes, hugs and emotional support. The efforts of everyone should be recognized. Although I did not lose anyone personally, my heart is heavy, even after 11 years. RIP to our lost Angels.

Bill was a long time teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools.

No need for a new holiday, a day of rememberence is fitting and Obama can push his service agenda somewhere else. Thank God Obama decided to play so much golf and take so much vacation. Can you imagine how much more damage he would've done if he'd actually had a work ethic?

Why would anyone want to call 9/11 a holiday? Holidays are happy times when celebrations are in order. There is nothing happy about celebrating the U.S. losing so many of our people on such a horrific day. Rather, let's call it REMEMBERANCE DAY and quietly remember those lost but never forgotten.
