Planners: Purple Line to Run Down Middle of Kenilworth Avenue

The change would spare many of the businesses originally slated to be torn down.

State transit planners say the Purple Line is now slated to run down the middle of Kenilworth Avenue as it crosses through Riverdale Park rather than hugging the west edge of the street, the Washington Post reports.

The change would spare many the businesses located on that side of the road, which had faced partial or full condemnation.

The new design would require trains running along the 16-mile light rail corridor to cross the southbound lanes of Kenilworth Avenue at River Road.

Maryland Transit Administration officials will discuss the changes and other aspects of the Riverdale Park station during a public meeting 7 p.m. tonight at Riverdale Park Town Hall (5008 Queensbury Rd.).

It's going to run down the middle of Kenilworth Avenue, which is a traffic nightmare at any time, and the businesses, etc., are going to be spared? Yeah, right. More than likely the road will have to be widened to accomodate the rail, road traffic, etc., and it's a good bet at least some of the businesses will have to go.

I am surprised the Town of Riverdale Park Council and Mayor "rubber stamped" the Purple Line without considering the consequences...
On further reflection, the entire Town Council and Mayor were voted into office on 250 votes total, in a town of over 3000. A small group of people making big mistakes. Decisions like this and the Cafritz development should be a referendum decision.
