"Each year one vicious habit rooted out, in time might make the worst man good throughout," Benjamin Franklin wrote in Poor Richard's Almanac. It was part of the first set of published New Year's Resolutions, according to Yahoo News.

And the tradition lives on. Today, we promise ourselves every Jan. 1 that this will be the year we lose weight, quit smoking or save money, in our own personal mission to make ourselves "good throughout."
