Update, 11 a.m.:
The University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted unanimously Monday morning to accept an invitation to join the Big Ten Conference and leave the Atlantic Coast Conference, ESPN reported.
It's unclear when Maryland would make the move, but a buy out from the ACC could cost as much as $50 million, according to ESPN.
Original Post, 5:30 a.m.:
As soon as Monday the University of Maryland could end its 60-year affiliation with the Atlantic Coast Conference and join the Big Ten, according to a Baltimore Sun article.
The Board of Regents at the university will meet Monday to discuss the move, thought Baltimore Sun reported it wasn't clear whether the board vote was necessary or if Chanvellor William E. Kirwan could decide on his own.
After the decission is made, Maryland would have to formally apply for Big Ten admission and the conference would have to vote on it.

No more Duke v. Terps; and no more UNC v. Terps!

Who didn't know this would happen, it is all about the money , nothing more.
I certainly hope the Alumni stops all donations to the University until such time as they come to their senses.

So, where does the $50 million come from? John Q. Public?

Maybe the Board of Regents will take it out of their own personal pockets.

I'm so sad about this. There was something electric about a Terps v. Duke game. I'll miss that.

At some point the Big 10 is really going to have to consider changing it's name.

Bad move!
Maryland's football team is not good enough for the Big Ten. many;and's lacrosse team is too good for a conference that doesn't even sponsor lacrosse and where only 2 out of 12 schools play the sport.

This really is a sad day, I understand it is all about the football money, but the basketball program was nothing but fun to follow and watch, no more Duke, North Carolina, NC State, Wake, Clemson, VA. they were some great days

Well it doesn't have to be over yet. If the students, Alumni and friends of the university rise up and say "NO". Form a group to go to the State Legislature and demand that funding for anything but education programs be completely cut out of the budget for next year, just maybe, that will dirve some sense into their heads at Maryland.Start by emailing Dr Kirwan and the Board of Regents, then write your State Senator and Delegates. Tell them to stop this foolishness.

Great move for Maryland. $6 mil more from Big Ten TV contract. We will miss the Duke --Md basketball ,but that is about all. With the extra money Md should be able to reinstate the sports they had to drop. . In 5-6 years we will all look back on this move a positive step ---

Rocky, very good point here "Md should be able to reinstate the sports they had to drop". Isn't that to late already, and will they really reinstate them. I doubt it, the money will go to the football program and nothing else. Just watch.;

It's a bitter sweet deal, there won't be the famous "beat the Duke" game nights, but on
a positive note the inclusion in "BIG TEN" is ten times in weight vis a vis ACC.

UNREAL! Maryland will NEVER be able to compete in the Big 10 and the reason they cant now is due to the INCOMPENTENT individuals running the show! How bout disclosing the monies that they get and we get NOTHING in return! Fire Fridge, buy out his last year and what did we get? The WORST MD football ever with a coach & higher salary! Nice Move! Basketball, this idiot will NEVER bring a championship to MD with the ACC and now the Big Ten! NEVER! Be heard and just BOYCOTT the U of MD. 50 million and that gets us what?

LOH & ANDERSON = DUMB & DUMBER
Maryland needs LEADERSHIP and these 2 along with Edsall & Turgeon bring NOTHING to the U of MD but disgrace and a sports program nearing the FISCAL EDGE! Great Idea, stay in the ACC by giving back all YOUR SALARIES!
Almost as HILARIOUS as Obama & Biden!
Ever wonder why Maryland doesnt pull in the BIG recruits? The HS students are smarter than the ones running the program!
Congrats to Coach Franklin who was smart enough to leave when he did and to Fridge for the best football that we had in years!
