Christmas Tree Shops Open for Business
A number of stores are open for business in and around Riverdale Park and University Park.
It's that time of year again, when towns celebrate with tree lightings and the smell of pine fills homes in anticipation for Christmas.
For those that haven't purchased their trees yet, have no fear – there are many local businesses ready to sell you the perfect tree.
If you're ready to make your purchases this weekend there are a few places already ready for customers including Behnke Nurseries off Baltimore Avenue in Beltsville.
Their store is jammed-packed with wreaths, Christmas bows, a variety of trees and poinsettias.
Opened seven-days-a-week, the store will even custom make a wreath or bows.
Ray Woodruff, owner of Old St. Nick's Christmas Trees, will begin selling trees on Dec. 6 at the Rancho Bar and Grill on Baltimore Avenue in Riverdale.
But for two days, Woodruff will set up shop in town center as a part of Riverdale Park's Holiday Market and Festival of Lights on Dec. 11.
His farm in Mercerburg, Pa. produces most of the trees, while others come from various distributors because they cannot be grown locally.
"We have douglas fir, Colorado blue spruce, fraser fir and balsam fir trees," Woodruff said. "We've been doing this for over 20 years."
In addition to the trees, he'll have wreaths available for purchase from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
There are a number of additional parking-lot Christmas tree businesses – including one at the Redeemer Lutheran Church off East West Highway in Hyattsville and at St. Mark the Evangelist School at 7501 Adelphi Rd in Hyattsville.
Big-box stores like Home Depot also have trees on hand starting at $19.97.
