With 19 votes in our (admittedly unscientific) poll, Plato's Diner takes the prize among Riverdale Park-University Park Patch readers as the top breakfast spot in the area.
The beloved eatery offers and American classics and Greek dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and the odd late night snack. It earns the title of "best of" despite calling College Park home—clearly demonstrating that appetites know no town borders.
Michelle Akaras told Patch that her husband, Tony, opened up the diner in 1994, inspired by his Greek heritage and matching the entrepreneurship he saw in his own father. Ms. Akaras, who began helping with operations a couple years later, said it's been neat to become a part of the community.
“Over time we’ve come to build a nice base of customers," she said. “I’ve watched children to grow up and have their own children.”
The diner is no stranger to accolades: in 2003, The Washington Post also named Plato's as one of the best establishments of its kind in the Washington metro area.
If you find yourself hungry in the middle of the night for "French Shorty" or "Huevos Mexicana," know that the diner is open 24 hours a day on Friday and Saturday. The rest of the week, the restaurant operates from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m.
Join us on Monday for our next installment of "Best Of" when we round up some of the top workout spots in the area.
